Environmental Scan Checklist
Walk your home and check the visible signals — intake forms, signage, common spaces, and washrooms — that tell 2SLGBTQI+ residents whether they can be safe here.
Updated October 20, 2025
Walk the building with this checklist. Small fixes add up. Remember: visible symbols help only when backed by policy, training, and follow-through — a rainbow with no substance behind it can erode trust.
Intake and forms
- Admission form asks for chosen name and pronouns, not just legal name.
- Relationship field allows "partner" and "chosen family," not only "spouse" and "next of kin."
- Gender field is open or offers more than male/female, with a "prefer not to say" option.
- Forms do not require legal name in any field visible to other residents or visitors.
Signage and visible signals
- A non-discrimination statement that names sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression is posted at reception and in resident areas.
- Any pride symbol or rainbow is paired with evidence of training and policy (not posted alone).
- Washroom signage is inclusive and clear.
Common spaces
- Activity calendar uses inclusive wording ("bring someone who matters to you," not only "family day").
- Photos and posters on the walls reflect a range of people and relationships.
- Dining and seating arrangements do not isolate residents by assumption.
Care areas
- Whiteboards and door labels use chosen names and pronouns.
- Private space is available for sensitive conversations.
- A reference card with correct names, pronouns, and key terms is at the nursing station.
