One-Page Huddle Scripts

Print this page and keep copies at the nursing station. Each script fits in a 5–10 minute huddle. Read it out loud, invite one question, and pick one action for the shift.

Huddle 1 — The four terms (10 minutes)

Sex: the label put on you at birth based on your body. Gender identity: who you know yourself to be. Gender expression: how you show your gender to the world. Sexual orientation: who you are drawn to. A person can be any combination of these four. Two-Spirit is a specific identity held by some Indigenous people — its own thing, not a synonym for LGBTQ.

Action: everyone uses one resident’s chosen name and pronouns correctly for the whole shift.

Huddle 2 — Correcting a pronoun mistake (5 minutes)

If you get it wrong, correct yourself briefly and move on: "Sorry — she. As I was saying…" Do not make it a big moment. If a colleague slips, coach them privately, not in front of the resident.

Action: pick one resident and double-check their name and pronouns are on the handover sheet.

Huddle 3 — In the moment (5 minutes)

If a resident makes a homophobic or transphobic comment to another resident, say calmly: "We don’t speak about people that way here." Then check in privately with the person targeted: "I saw what happened. Are you okay? What would help?"

Action: agree who on the shift will document any incident, same day.

Huddle 4 — Chosen family (5 minutes)

Many 2SLGBTQI+ residents have chosen family instead of, or alongside, biological family. Treat chosen family as family for visiting and care planning where the resident wishes. Never out a resident to family or other residents.

Action: check that one resident’s chosen-family contact is recorded in the care plan.
